In a way, it was rather uplifting. Each moment we spend with our child, is a gift. It anchors us to that ancient of all behaviors; passing our personal experience on to the next generation.
That author, due to circumstance, has discovered a truth that usually eludes us until our grandparenting days.
We love. Not for ourselves, but for the benefit of our love's recipients.
